April 6, 2016 – 6p Central (social starts at 5p)
DeWitt room, Doubletree
6505 Interstate Highway 35-N

This evening session focused on the impact that the oil spill has had on managed fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists talked about how the oil spill impacted fish populations and fisheries and fish development.

Introduction to the Oil Spill Science Outreach Program
Larissa Graham is an oil spill science outreach specialist with Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant. She facilitated the evening seminar and gave attendees an explanation of the Sea Grant-GoMRI oil spill science outreach program. View the pdf. Watch the video.

Deepwater Horizon: What we know and don’t know about impacts on fishes
Dr. Joel Fodrie is an Assistant Professor of fisheries oceanography and ecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where he studies the population dynamics of fishes and shellfish along all three major U.S. coastlines. His presentation explained the impacts that the oil spill had on populations of fish and how some of these impacts are still unclear. Watch the video.

The embryo and its environment
Dr. Benjamin Dubansky is a developmental physiologist at the University of North Texas’ Developmental Integrative Biology Research Cluster. His presentation focused on the negative effects that oil can have on fish and how some populations have adapted to be resistant to these impacts. Watch the video.

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: Impacts on Gulf of Mexico Fisheries
Christine Hale
is an oil spill science outreach specialist with Texas Sea Grant. She provided a short presentation during the day at the Council meeting. Her presentation discussed the impacts that the oil spill has had on fisheries. View the pdf. Listen to the recording.
